Romania’s IT&C sector has consolidated its position as a strategic pillar of the economy, becoming the country’s leading exporter of services and one of the largest contributors to GDP, according to data from the ANIS industry study.

In 2024, the total turnover of the Romanian IT&C sector reached €23.6 billion, driven primarily by the IT segment, which climbed to €17.7 billion. The sector’s direct contribution to GDP stood at 6.67%, slightly below the 6.8% recorded in 2023, but still among the highest sectoral shares in the economy.

IT&C services accounted for 25.6% of Romania’s total services exports in 2024. Momentum continued into 2025, with the sector becoming the country’s number one services exporter in the first seven months of the year, highlighting the growing international relevance of Romania’s technology ecosystem.

Employment figures show a more moderate pace of expansion

The number of IT employees reached 195,929 in 2024, marking a slight increase compared to 2023, but remaining below the record level achieved in 2022. Despite slower hiring, compensation levels continued to rise, with the average gross salary in the local IT&C sector exceeding 15,000 lei.

Personnel expenses climbed to 45 billion lei, representing 38.4% of total sector turnover, the highest share among all economic sectors in Romania. This reflects both the high value-added nature of IT&C activities and intense competition for skilled talent.
